Community Events

Throughout the year a number of special events are held in downtown Boise, supported in part by CCDC.
 |
Capital City Public Market
Every Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from May to the holiday season,
an outdoor public market is open on Eighth Street from Bannock
Street to the Grove. The market features fresh produce from
local growers, baked goods, handicrafts, arts programs and
street musicians and has proven to be a major draw to downtown
Boise. This portion of Eighth Street is owned by CCDC and
made available to the public market; the agency also funds
the Performing Arts at the Saturday Market, managed by Boise
City Arts Commission. It has become Boise's Saturday morning
meeting place. |

Alive After Five
Every Wednesday evening during the warm weather months (usually May through August),
beginning at 5:00 p.m. on the Grove Plaza, you can take in
live music appealing to a variety of tastes, delicious food
and drink and join throngs of individuals and families. CCDC
owns the Grove Plaza (built as part of its downtown revitalization
efforts) and makes it available to the Downtown
Boise Association who funds these musical events. Few
communities enjoy this level of activity in their downtown,
especially on a weeknight. |

First Thursday
Started as a gallery walk on the first Thursday of each month,
First Thursday has expanded to include gallery openings,
stores staying open late and special arts events in downtown
Boise. This festive atmosphere provides a consistent draw
for residents and visitors to come downtown, enjoy the activities
and patronize downtown stores and restaurants. |

Fall for Boise and City Arts Celebration
Fall for Boise is
a grass-roots effort by local arts and cultural nonprofit
organizations, community events, downtown businesses and city
leadership to showcase the diversity of Boise's arts and community.
The kickoff is the City Arts Celebration, first Saturday in
September, featuring short performances by Opera
Idaho, Ballet Idaho,
Idaho Dance Theater, Treasure Valley Concert Band and many
other of the area's best musicians and multicultural performing
groups. The all-day event is co-sponsored by CCDC and takes
place in the Grove Plaza. |

Tree Lighting Ceremony
Holiday lighting adds to the festive atmosphere in downtown Boise between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. On Friday following Thanksgiving, the Mayor joins a few thousand of his closest friends on the Grove Plaza to light the community's ceremonial tree. This also marks the time when the rest of downtown lighting displays are illuminated. CCDC has participated by placing holiday lighting on its public parking garages and on the street trees along Eighth and Idaho streets and on purchasing the lighted holiday wreaths that grace the historic street lights in the retail core of downtown.
